Construction Management 101

Introduction

Construction is a BIG business (almost $1 trillion annually), accounting for more than 5X the economic activity of agriculture ($150 billion). Few industries are larger. And yet, construction has tended to resist the consolidation and professionalization of other large industries. As a result, a tremendous amount of construction is executed without what we call "professional contracting discipline." It's messy, expensive and often sad for consumers.

Managing construction is never easy. The only reliable, repeatable method is the set of practices developed over the last hundred years or so, described in the most popular construction documents (including AIA 101 & 201 and the 200 Series from ConsensusDocs), and taught in university Construction Management (CM) programs around the world. Construction Management 101 is a top-level, 100% summary of the key fundamentals of project planning, contracting, and project controls, including the roles and responsibilities of each party, and a review of case studies where these fundamentals have been applied to successful projects. Since no two projects are exactly alike, we need a framework that can be applied to all projects and also serve as a comparison to illustrate the differences in project delivery schemes: We use Contracting 101 and The DBSKCV Construction Management Method.

Construction Management 101 is designed to help you understand the skills Construction Managers and a Construction Management firms require for project success and to protect against the most common pitfalls that cause project shortcomings, defects, delays, cost over-runs, legal disputes and headaches in general. We will explain the tools to manage a project's scope, quality, budget and schedule. This presentation is for design and construction professionals, building officials, attorneys, adjusters, property managers, homeowners (so they realize they should never try to manage their own project), and anyone involved or interested in the construction business.
